Autonomy
In Pre-Constitutional Physics, autonomy is a system’s local capacity to regulate its internal state using feedback under constraint.
Autonomy does not imply freedom, authority, independence, or intention. It describes the degree to which a bounded system can maintain internal coherence and select among available state transitions without direct external specification.
Conditions for Autonomy
A system is autonomous to the extent that:

it maintains boundary integrity,

it responds to disturbances using internal feedback,

and it selects among feasible state transitions using internally mediated regulation.
Autonomy exists only within a constrained feasible space defined by physical, informational, energetic, biological, or institutional limits. A system may exhibit autonomy while remaining strongly dependent on external conditions.
Graded Autonomy
Autonomy is graded, not binary.
Systems may possess more or less autonomy depending on:

feedback quality,

response latency,

internal modeling capacity,

and boundary stability.
Changes in these properties can increase or reduce autonomy without altering the underlying constraint structure.
Partial Autonomy and Nested Systems
In nested systems, autonomy is always relative to scale.
A subsystem may be autonomous with respect to its immediate environment while remaining constrained by larger systems. Cells, organs, organisms, organizations, and institutions all exhibit partial autonomy within enclosing constraint structures.
No system possesses total autonomy. Total autonomy would require exemption from constraint, boundary, and feedback, which is incompatible with persistence.
Autonomy and Control
Autonomy is always exercised within control constraints. Increased autonomy at one scale may increase control at another, and loss of autonomy often reflects constraint tightening rather than external domination.
Autonomy without control is incoherent; control without autonomy is brittle.
